Default How do I know what to use salvage on and what not to?

From what I read on the forums...don't salvage items unless it has armor rating over 39? And everything else = sell?

And if it's a salvage item with possible rare or common crafting material....should I bother with trying to get the rare?

i salvage almost everything

low level sword will give an iron ingot with a regular salvage which costs 4 gold and is worth 5-8 gold depending

wood plank from bow or whatever gives at least 5 gold bach
same for cloth

anything that salvages into glittering dust dont salvage unless you need dust for yourself as it sells for 3 gold so you lose 1 gold

that is for low level items as early as ascalon

Allways use superior or expert salvage kits. Superiors are more cost effective but you have to buy five times the ammount of them which is just annoying.

My rules are this. For weapons Anything white gets salvaged unless it has a rare skin. Then it probably get salvaged unless it's seriously rare. Anything blue->purple goes to the merchant, unless it is highly salvageable. Gold probably goes to the merchant unless it's got a good mod that is at best two points off perfect (except skill boost mods). If it has those they get salvaged or attempted to.

Stackable salvages get stored then bulk salvaged (this is more for convenience rather than any real need).

Armour - white armour gets salvaged without looking at it. Armours with runes on them get identified and then the rune's value is compared to the buy value of the trader. If the value to buy is less than 150 I sell the rune straight away. If the value is 150-300 I compare it to the value of the armour unsalvaged - if it's a low value armour then I'll salvage the rune, however if it's a high cost armour I'll sell the armour. Anything worth more than that to buy at the trader gets salvaged and sold. I don't bother looking at armour values.

But you forget that there's a price on the sword itself too, so your cost of salvaging that item isn't just the cost of the salvage tool but the cost of salvage tool + cost of selling that item. So you are losing gold nonetheless

true.

but here is the problem. if you are in a mission you cant map back to sell and empty your inventoyr for more things to sell.

if you have made major progress in getting (for example) Althieas Ashes quest you can take your full inventory back to town to sell it but all the enemies will respawn and you have to do it over.

with experience you will have a better feel of i save this but i salvage that and this i leave behind.

if you are just farming a bit and have junk take it back and sell it.

also on mid level anything ID it before selling it as most of the time the ID will be worth it

if the merchant offers at least 20 gold you usually come out ahead

check the offer he makes and ID the item and watch his offer go up for a check

It's unwise to use Expert or Superior Salvage kits on everything, for two reasons--

1 If there's a crappy mod on a blue or purple item, you're better off just getting the raw materials by using a regular kit.

2 For some items, Expert Kits yield no more raw materials than the regular ones do, IE bows and staffs. You only want to use Expert kits to obtain mods or rare materials such as steel.

The trick to salvaging is knowing when to salvage and when to sell to merchant, which basically involves knowing the value of the raw materials you may salvage from the item (for instance, 15 wood = ~150 gold).

PS on "Highly Salvageble" items, the same rules apply. Use regulars on stuff like bows and staffs, but use Experts on items which might yield steel.

Are all rare materials worth salvaging? Or just steel? :/

With armour I usually only salvage them when they have runes, because I find most of them are worth more at the merchant unsalaveged than as materials.
I don't require any material at the moment and can't be bothered getting enough to sell in Droknars Forge or waiting for someone to buy off me so I just sell everything at the merchant.
If a gold item has any near perfect/perfect mods I keep them and try to find someone who wants to buy them.
